How Often Should I Clean My Gutters?

April 10, 2019

Nobody enjoys cleaning out their gutters—we totally get that. It’s a dirty, inconvenient job that requires you to get up high and deal with issues such as rotting or wet leaves, birds’ nests and various other forms of debris. However, unless you have gutter guards installed on your gutters, it’s a task you’re going to need to take on somewhat regularly as a homeowner so you can prevent having issues with overflowing gutters during major rainstorms. Overflowing gutters lead to flooding issues and damaged landscaping, so it’s best to avoid this problem as much as you can.

Here’s some information from a gutter contractor in Oklahoma City about the dangers associated with not cleaning your gutters, as well as some tips about how frequently you should clean them.

Pinpointing damage caused by unclean gutters

To find areas that either have already been damaged or are at risk of being damaged due to unclean gutters, you can perform a brief visual inspection of your gutters during the fall. Some of the warning signs you’ll want to look for include:

  • Pools of water: If you see pools of water forming near your foundation, on your lawn, in your driveway or anywhere else near your gutters or downspouts, it could be a sign that your gutters aren’t connected properly or are overflowing with debris.
  • Dripping gutters: If your gutters aren’t draining at all and are actually dripping over the edges, this is a sign you have blockages in your gutter system from too much debris.
  • Water being found where it shouldn’t be: Are you starting to see more water around your house? This is especially problematic if it’s pooling up in certain areas, such as seeping through the foundation to get into the basement. You should make sure to resolve the issue as soon as possible, because long-term water damage can be devastating and very expensive to fix, depending on the affected locations.
  • More pests: If you’re seeing more bugs or pests around your house, or even hearing them in your walls, this could be a sign that they’ve been able to build a nice little ecosystem inside all the debris and dampness trapped in your gutters. Again, a visual inspection will tell you more.

As a general rule, you should aim to clean your gutters a couple times a year—once late in the spring and once toward the end of summer or at the beginning of fall. But depending on your home, you may need to do so more often, especially if you have a lot of trees on your property (and specific types of trees that can get messier at certain times of year). By keeping your gutters clean, you’ll avoid some potential property damage and also keep the gutters themselves in good condition for many more years to come.
